Nearly 1000 runners, including 300 children, descended on Marwell this Sunday (29th April), to compete in the 10k road race and children’s fun run round the park.
2004 winner, Andy Morgan-Lee from Southampton RC regained his crown with a winning time of 32 minutes 10 seconds. 2006 and 2005 winner, James Baker from Chichester Runners & AC came in second, just 39 seconds behind Andy. Stubbington Green R & AC runner Mark Le Gassick came third with a time of 33 minutes and 17 seconds.
Karrie Blake of Denmead Striders was the ladies winner in a time of 39 minutes 25 seconds with Lesley Locks of Hart Road Runners a very close second, finishing the course just 9 seconds after Karrie. Sue True from Winchester & District AC came in third with a time of 42 minutes and 39 seconds.
Team prizes went to Southampton Road Runners in the Men’s race and Denmead Striders in the Ladies race.
Jointly organised with Eastleigh Running Club, all money raised will go towards the zoo’s conservation campaign ‘Madagascar Matters’ to help protect endangered animal species, such as the lemur, on the Indian Ocean Island of Madagascar. Although the final amount raised is not yet known organisers are hopeful that a similar amount to last year of £6,100 will be raised.
Children also did their bit for Madagascar by taking part in the specially designed Junior Fun Run. The Fun Run has proved extremely popular, with over 300 children aged 5-11 taking part.
