New faces, new strategies – conservation in Kenya

With three recently appointed positions, including a national Grevy’s Zebra Liason Officer, as well as Kenya’s first national Grevy’s zebra strategy in place, conservation efforts are going stronger than ever.Grevys zebra

Towards the end of the 1970s, the total wild population of Grevy’s zebra was estimated to be approximately 15,000 animals – today the Grevy’s zebra is critically endangered as less than 2,000 remain in the wild. Whereas the species used to be sought by hunters for trophies or for its fur, the main threats to the species today are habitat loss and degradation.

Marwell is a key stakeholder in helping secure the future of the Grevy's zebra. In this talk our Kenya Programme Manager, Dr. Guy Parker, will outline how we are supporting the national strategy for Grevy’s zebra, as well as discuss the various initiatives that are taking place. From helping coordinate the first national survey in eight years to assess the status of wild Grevy’s in Kenya, providing training to local biologists and technical support to partner organizations to working with communities to help them achieve their conservation goals.

The talk is free to Annual Pass holders. If you wish to bring a guest we ask for a small donation. The talk will be held in the Education Centre at 7.45pm. Entrance is via the main gate between 7.15pm and 7.40pm only. Please park in the Education Centre car park.
