    Boomer, our male ostrich is a proud dad to eight ostrich chicks. Ostriches are the word’s largest flightless bird so at just 25cm (10 inches) the adorable chicks will now grow at an incredible rate, eventually reaching the lofty heights of their dad, of around 3 metres (120 inches).

  • Three Przewalski's horse foals have been born this year!

    The first arrived on 19 April. We’ve named him Doloo, meaning seven, which follows our tradition of naming our horses with Mongolian numbers. Number eight, Naim, a female, followed on 27 May and Es, a male, was born on 14 June.

    We are pleased to announce the winners of our inaugural photography competition.

    ‘A Swallows Tale – The Chase’ taken by Paul Cook (36) from Glasgow fought off tough competition to scoop first prize. Whilst 14 year old Danielle Connor from Wimbledon Common secured first place in the Junior category with her stunning ‘Little Brown Bug’ image.

    We are celebrating the birth of our first pure bred Rothschild giraffe since 1997. Keepers have named the new addition Nsia, which means ‘the sixth born child’ in Akan, a language spoken in Ghana, west Africa. Pronounced ‘nseeah’, the name is very apt as she is the sixth calf born to her mother, Matilda.

    Our herd of Przewalski horses has, for the second year running, grown in size. The four new foals have been named Gurav, Dorov, Tav and Zurgaa, which mean three, four, five and six in Mongolian.

    Some of our animals have been given their very own giant blackcurrant flavoured ice lolly. Made as part of our behavioural enrichment programme, keepers hoped the lolly would help cool the animals down in the summer heat, as well as encourage the animals’ natural behaviour and curiosity.

  • Ralph the bald penguin gets a wetsuit

    A bald penguin has been given a specially-designed wetsuit to help protect him from the risk of sunburn. Penguins moult every year, which usually takes between four to six weeks to complete. However, Ralph lost all of his feathers in one day, the wetsuit will protect Ralph’s sensitive skin until his new feathers have grown through.

    A humbug-striped Brazilian tapir was born on Tuesday 21 July after a 13 month gestation to mum Summer. Like all baby tapirs, the little girl was born with a beautiful coat of pale spots and stripes on a reddish brown background.

    We are delighted to announce that our new baby giraffe has been named Kwame, which means ‘born on Saturday’ in Twi, a language spoken in Ghana, west Africa. The name is very apt as the new giraffe was born on Saturday 6 June 2009 to mum Isabella and dad Kismet.

  • Free bus service from Eastleigh rail station all summer

    From Sunday 7 June a FREE bus service from Eastleigh rail station to the park will run every Sunday until September, including August bank Holiday Monday. Eight services will depart from Eastleigh rail station at 25 minutes past the hour starting from 10.25am, and travel direct to us passing through Fair Oak and Fisher’s Pond. A bus will then leave the park at 45 minutes past the hour, starting at 10.45am, for the return journey back to Eastleigh rail station.

    Keepers received a surprise recently when a new male Chapman’s zebra foal was born several weeks early. Despite his early appearance, the foal was soon standing and within just a few hours had already learnt how to suckle from his mum, Phoebe.

    World renowned conservationists descended on Marwell Wildlife recently to attend the 10th annual meeting of the Sahelo-Saharan Interest Group. Under discussion was how best to help the varied wildlife which lives within North Africa and the Sahara, the world’s largest desert.

  • Brazilian tapirs back in the park

    Following an absence of over 10 years, we have welcomed back two Brazilian tapirs into our collection. Summer and her partner Ronaldo arrived four weeks ago as part of a European Breeding Programme for the species. They have settled well into their new home and can be seen most days out together in their new paddock beside the pygmy hippos.

  • New born capybaras in the park now

    Four new born capybara are now out and about at the park. Mother Hayley (3) and father Bugsy (6) are the proud new parents and the whole family can be seen roaming with the greater rhea.
    Capybara are the worlds largest rodent and found naturally in the wild in S. America, east of the Andes, from Panama to N. Argentina.

    His Excellency Mr. Joseph Muchemi, the Kenyan High Commissioner gave our ‘African Valley’ his seal of approval today (Friday 3 April) when he immortalised his hand print, as in the style of the famous Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard. The hand impression mimics our new brand identity and logo.

    Four Bennett’s wallabies are now peeking out of their mum’s pouches for the first time. Wallabies are simply small kangaroos. The Bennett’s wallaby is the Tasmanian subspecies of the red-necked wallaby of southern and eastern Australia.

    Four young frilled lizards can now be seen in their new home in Tropical World. They are around six months old, will be fully grown in the next year or two and so far they have settled in nicely.

    A group of 12 greater flamingos have joined our flamingo group as part of a strategy to boost numbers. In the wild, flamingos can live in groups numbering thousands and they prefer to lay eggs in the protection of these large groups.

  • Rescued black widow spider finds new home at Marwell

    28 January 2009
    We have rehomed a black widow spider after a member of the public found it in a car part that they had imported from America. The female black widow settled into her new home quickly and promptly laid an egg sac containing over 100 eggs. The baby spiders, known as spiderlings, have since hatched and can now be seen in the Animal Barn in Encounter Village.

  • Amur leopards, tigers and meerkats recyle Christmas 'firs'

    The leopards, tigers and meerkats enjoyed a late festive treat today as they were given left over Christmas trees to explore and play with. Provided by the keepers, as part of a behavioural enrichment programme, the trees’ unusual smells, interesting textures and new shapes instantly aroused the animals’ curiosity and inquisitiveness.

    Our first ever female sand cat settled in well to her new home in the Desert carnivore house last year. After potential successful matings with the lucky chosen male out of our three hopefuls, anticipations are now high for the patter of little foot pads appearing during 2009.

  • Camel's arrival brings joy this Christmas

    Our newest arrival, a young Bactrian camel, may not be bringing gifts of gold, frankincense or myrrh with him following his journey but he has made Wacker, our 20 year old Bactrian camel very happy this Christmas.

  • Our latest showcase...her name is Lola

    Over 14,000 votes were received in the public ballot to name our newest arrival, a pygmy hippopotamus, and the winning name is…Lola. The name was extremely popular and received 7838 votes - a whopping 53% of the vote.

    We are proud to announce the birth of three Dorcas gazelles. Born just days apart, on the 8th, 13th and 16th November, they have been named Piper, Rocket and Rooster after varieties of potato – well their father is named Spud after all!

    Around 100 Partula snail species exist and they are all indigenous to just a few islands in the South Pacific. The snails have gone into precipitous decline in recent years as they have suffered massively from habitat loss and the introduction of a carnivorous snail.

    Four of the world’s most critically endangered bird species have recently hatched. The waldrapp ibis (also known as the northern bald ibis) has been declared the ‘rarest and most threatened animal of the Middle East’ and as such, these latest chicks are vital additions to helping save this rare species from extinction.

    Following a pregnancy which lasts for over a year we are delighted with our latest new arrival, a healthy female okapi calf. Born on Monday 2nd June 2008, we have named her Hazina which means valuable treasure in Swahili, the language spoken in the okapi’s native Congo.

  • Double celebrations as second baby giraffe is born

    We are celebrating the birth of two baby giraffes within a month. The latest arrival was born on Friday 6th June and is called Tiye after a beautiful queen of Ancient Egypt.Tiye, who is already over 6ft tall, is being looked after by her mum, Mary. The name also means beautiful and gorgeous.

    A pygmy marmoset was born on the 23rd May. The youngster can now be seen living with the family group (which consists of mum, dad, twins born last year and another, older, sibling) opposite the entrance to the Lemur World complex.

    Marwell hosted Dreamnight on Friday 13th; a special event run every year to enable children with disabilities and their families to enjoy free entry to the park.

  • Marabou Mansions receive two new guests

    Two Marabou stork have recently arrived and can now be seen in the bird enclosure (which keepers call Marabou Mansions) opposite the giraffe house.

  • Dwarf forest buffalos named after sports stars

    30th May 2008
    The first dwarf forest buffalo male arrived at Marwell in 1978 and was called Muhammad Ali, or Champ for short, after the acclaimed American boxer. All youngsters (from this species) born at Marwell have since been given names from the world of sport.

  • New giraffe calf is standing tall

    We are celebrating the birth of a new baby giraffe. Born on the morning of Wednesday 14th May, the giraffe calf is already 6ft tall and has been named Christa after her dad, Christopher.

    We will be enthralling children this May half term (Monday 26 – Friday 30 April) with stories about the mysterious and bizarre animals from Australia. Capturing children’s attention as they listen to the dilemmas Australian animals face and their struggle for survival, the FREE story telling sessions will be brought to life by our intrepid animal experts and will also include fun colouring in activities.

    We are delighted to announce the recent birth of two meerkat kittens. Affectionately known as ‘kits’ by our keepers they made their appearance known on the 24th March when they first made calls and squeaks whilst still underground in their den.

    Keepers were astonished recently to find an albino Bennett’s wallaby peering out of her mum’s pouch. It is not un-common for albinos to be born in captivity and they have been born at Marwell in the past. However, albino wallabies in the wild are rare with as few as one in 10,000.

    Despite the thunderstorms and rain, nearly 1000 runners and 300 children gathered at the park last Sunday (27th April) for the Marwell 10km Road Race and Fun Run. Luck was on our side and the weather cleared just in time for the race starts.

    We are proud to announce the successful birth of a baby douroucouli. Also known as owl monkeys, they are the world’s only nocturnal monkey. Native to South America, Keepers have called the new baby Curraray after a river in Ecuador.

    We received a staggering 10,000 votes on our online poll to name our Amur leopard cub, and the winning name is…Kiska. Pronounced ‘Keys-ka’, Kiska is a Russian girl’s name meaning pure. The name was extremely popular and received a whopping 45% of the votes.

    Hampshire residents have voted Marwell as the place in the county they are most proud of The ‘Pride of Place’ poll was conducted online by Hampshire Council Council. Marwell was voted into Hampshire’s number one spot after gaining an impressive 30% of the votes cast.

    TV Presenter and Wildlife Champion, Chris Packham took to the ice today (Saturday 1 December) at Marwell Wildlife as he officially opened the park’s festive ‘Magical Winter’ event.

  • UK's first ever female Takin born at Marwell
    8th November

    Mei-ling, a Mishmi Takin, was born on 30th September to mum Mulan and dad Mooshu. It is difficult to estimate how many are left in the wild which is why it's so important that a safety net of Takins is built up in collections such as Marwell.  

  • Double delight - two rare Somali Wild Ass births
    5th October

    We are delighted to announce the recent birth of two rare female Somali Wild Asses. ‘Nadifa’ (Somali for ‘in-between seasons’) was born on 6th September and ‘Jahzara’ (Ethiopian for Blessed Princess) was born on 25th September.

    Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal gave our new exhibit ‘Life in the Trees’ the royal seal of approval when she formally opened it today (Monday 17 September).

    Following the confirmation of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey, on Wednesday 12th September, the park is open with bio security in place as a precaution against the disease.

  • Twin birth of endangered monkey species
    20th April

    We are delighted to announce the birth of twin Golden Lion Tamarins. With an estimated population of only around 1000 left in the wild, Golden Lion Tamarins are one of the most endangered monkey species in the world.

    Over six thousand people visited the park on Good Friday, with many gaining close encounters with some of the world’s most bizarre animals in the new Australian Bush Walk and Encounter Village.

  • Christmas Day Arrival
    25th December
    Brian the Nyala is our special Christmas baby as he was born on Christmas morning. Named after the character in Monty Python’s film The Life of Brian, Brian is the latest addition to the 25 Nyalas here at Marwell Zoo.
