Road Train

Marwell Zoo is set in 140 acres of beautiful Hampshire countryside, and your visit can be as relaxed or active as you’d like. Lots of our guests hop on our train during their visit.

Why not use our free Marwell Zoo app as you ride the train? You’ll find extra animal facts and videos where you can learn even more about our residents!

Guest notice: The road train will not be running on the following dates, 5 February, 14 March, 29 April, 10 June, 8 July, 9 September, 21 October and 2 December 2024.

Road Train

Departing from Okapi Station, the non-stop service meanders around the outer perimeter of the zoo in a clockwise direction. Our passengers can experience our 140-acre wildlife park and spot everything from giraffes and white rhinos to wallabies and zebras from the comfort of our new road train.

The first train will depart from Okapi Station at 11am daily and approximately every 30 minutes until 90 minutes before closing time. Admission is only permitted by guests who have purchased a road train ticket. Tickets cost £2 each while under threes and carers travel free. Card only payment will be taken at Okapi Station as guests board the train. All proceeds will support the care of our animals in the zoo and our conservation programmes across the world.

Additional information:

  • The train is equipped to carry one manual wheelchair, or equivalent, in the accessible carriage at the rear of the train.
  • A buggy park will be available for guests to use as we are unable to carry buggies and pushchairs on the train. All belongings are left at the owner’s risk.
  • The road train will operate a daily, one off, free service at 10.45am from the Gift Shop to Okapi Station. This service will be on a first-come first-serve basis and will help our guests who have difficulties getting up the hill to the middle of the zoo with priority being given to guests with mobility issues. The road train will then commence normal operations from Okapi Station. The free run will continue to assist guests with mobility issues at the end of the day.

Goodbye to our rail train service

After more than 40 years service, our Princess Anne loco, carriages and track have sadly come to the end of their life. The zoo layout has changed a lot during the last four decades and the railway no longer gives our guests the best possible views. We have some exciting plans for a new development at the front of the zoo and so we will be reviewing the service in the future. Watch this space!
