UPDATE: Gilbert has been found.
Marwell Wildlife is delighted to announce that Gilbert the zebra has been found safe and well!
Gilbert the Grevy’s zebra is the poster boy for mass art extravaganza Marwell’s Zany Zebras which is taking place in Southampton this summer.
Gilbert had been stolen overnight on Tuesday (May 10) from a pickup truck in the Bassett area of Southampton.
Thankfully police officers from Hampshire Constabulary located Gilbert in a back garden in the Shirley area of Southampton yesterday evening. Police are continuing their investigations to establish how Gilbert came to be in Shirley. His owners, Marwell Zoo, were informed of the good news and are delighted to have him back so that he will be able to take part in their public art extravaganza, Zany Zebras, which will see a herd of brightly coloured zebras take to the streets of Southampton this summer.
The Marwell’s Zany Zebras team collected Gilbert from Southampton Central Police Station this morning and they are delighted to see him back where he belongs.
Kirstie Mathieson, project manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras said: “We have been overwhelmed with support from the public to #BringGilbertHome. He is already a much-loved feature of Marwell’s Zany Zebras and everyone is so happy to see he is safe and well.
“Gilbert has now been brought back to Marwell Zoo where he is on display outside the Membership cabin until he joins his friends in Southampton to form part of the spectacular art trail around the city.
“We are so grateful to everyone for their support and everyone who called with leads of sightings and want to thank Redbridge Neighbourhood Beat for reuniting him with us.”
Gilbert along with 149 other sculptures will be forming a spectacular free trail across the city guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of the hundreds and thousands of people it will draw.
For 10 weeks from Saturday 16th July, Gilbert, along with 149 other Marwell’s Zany Zebras will gallop through the streets of Southampton creating a fun, family friendly sculpture trail for all to enjoy. As well as the Southampton trail, visitors to Marwell Zoo, near Winchester, can also enjoy a miniature trail.
There’s huge anticipation and excitement from the local community after the enormous success of Marwell Wildlife’s Go! Rhinos event in 2013.
After the event, all of the large sculptures will be sold at auction to raise funds to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife, and to support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.
Now Gilbert has returned home, he can get back to his Twitter account and you can follow him here @GilberttheZebra
Enquiries are ongoing to establish how Gilbert came to be in Shirley.
We would like to thank members of the public for their help in sharing the appeal to find Gilbert.
