Hartmann's mountain zebra
Hartmann’s mountain zebras Equus zebra hartmannae occur in the mountainous transition zone between the Namib Desert and the central plateau in Namibia. Although the status of this sub-species is better than that of the Cape mountain zebra of South Africa, it is still considered vulnerable to extinction.
We manage the International Studbook and European Ex situ Programme (EEP) for Hartmann’s mountain zebra. With questions about population viability, we are undertaking studies on the impact of disease, and to understand how reproductive performance of this and other species is affected by social behaviour and structure.
