Marwell runs an unpaid work experience keeper scheme between March and September each year, for a period of two weeks only.

Placements are limited to students 17 years of age and over and who are already  studying an animal related course such as the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA).

For Sparsholt College & University Centre (Winchester) students – applications should be made to your tutor direct at the beginning of November of the year prior to the period of work experience required.

To be considered for a position please complete an application form. The application form will be added in November for 2025 placements.

We do not offer internships

All work experience students must fulfil all of the above criteria and be able to produce a letter from their tutor confirming their appropriate course and be able to attend an interview before being considered for a placement.

Animal Behaviour Work Experience Placement

As an action oriented conservation charity, Marwell Wildlife’s desire is to connect people with nature. Through enthusing people about the wonders of the natural world we’re certain they’ll share our passion to conserve it.

An exciting work experience opportunity has arisen to support Marwell’s Animal Behaviourist with researching, monitoring and assessing animal welfare across our 140 acre zoological park. This work experience opportunity will allow the successful applicant to gain experience in zoo-based research and the scientific assessment and advancement of animal welfare.

Working alongside our Animal Behaviourist as part of our wider Veterinary Services Team your duties will include:

  • Research project design
  • Behavioural data collection via direct observations or via video
  • Mining of existing databases for analysis
  • Behavioural data analysis (including statistical analysis)
  • Maintaining research records
  • Carrying out literature searches and report/journal writing
  • Support use of the Animal Welfare Assessment Grid
  • Organising and leading Journal Club
  • Support with general administration

This placement is suitable for applicants with or working towards an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in zoology, animal behaviour/welfare, biology, or a related discipline. Experience collecting behavioural data would also be advantageous as would basic statistical analysis skills.

Preferred duration of placement is 9 months or longer, 21-35 hours per week. Starting date TBC.

Veterinary student applications

Where possible, Marwell’s vet team provide clinical EMS placements to 4th and final year veterinary students, wishing to get an insight into veterinary work in a UK zoo. Earlier years cannot be accommodated at present.

Internships

We do not offer internships at this time.
