Explore Earth’s frozen worlds during our home education week – the Polar Explorers edition!
Discover the remarkable wildlife and science of the polar regions, with a mix of guided talks, drop-in activities and storytelling sessions, exclusively for home educators.

Time: 10.30am – 3pm
Tickets: £8.95 per person, with one free adult for every paying child. Price includes a full day in the zoo (10am – 5pm), as well as access to all the activities!

Create your own Polar artwork
10.30am – 3pm
Create and colour your own Arctic fox, penguin or aurora art during these drop-in art sessions.
Talks: Creatures of Frozen Worlds
11am (all ages) / 12.15pm (ages 11+)
Join us in the Lecture Theatre for an introduction to life at the poles.
Discover the key differences between the Arctic and Antarctica. Learn about iconic animals like polar bears, penguins, narwhals and snowy owls, and discover how they survive extreme cold, long migrations and months of darkness.
We’ll begin with a general talk at 11am which is suitable for all ages. At 12.15pm, we’ll dive deeper into the topic, exploring adaptations, food webs, and climate change in more depth (suitable for ages 11+).
Ice Lab: Adaptations of the Frozen World
12pm – 3pm
Step into our mini research station and explore what makes a creature truly polar-ready. Hands-on activities include:
- Blubber Glove: test how insulation works
- Design a Polar Habitat: build a snowy or icy mini environment
- Learn about an Ice Age Creature: mammoths, giant sloths, woolly rhinos and more
- Build a Beast: create your own polar animal using mix-and-match adaptations
Storytelling: Journey to the Icy Past
12.15pm & 1.45pm
Travel back in time to meet Ice Age giants and discover their modern day relatives in this calm, low stimulus space for younger learners. Enjoy gentle soundscapes, snow textures, aurora shadows, and stories inspired by the past.
