We have a new arrival and a new name!

December 5, 2018

In December we have welcomed a male blesbok and named the Hartmann’s zebra foal…

Our Hartmann’s zebra foal has been named!

Back in October we welcomed the arrival of a gorgeous Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal. First time mother, Dorotka, is genetically very important to the European population and the last successful breeding of the vulnerable species at the zoo was back in 1997. The foal has now been confirmed as female and named Damara, after the inhabitants of Namibia.

Marwell manages the International Studbook and the European Ex situ Programme (EEP) for the Hartmann’s zebra, which can be found in Namibia, Angola and South Africa. Damara has settled in well with the rest of the group and can be seen between the Amur leopards and the giraffe house.

We have welcomed our first male blesbok to the park!

Blas-Owe arrived from Port Lympne zoo in Kent, as part of the European Ex situ Programme (EEP), and has joined the four female blesbok in the paddock outside Tropical House. If you take any pictures of our animals, make sure you share them with us on our Flickr page!
