Sloth

Our new Linné’s two-toed sloth has arrived at Marwell

Santos arrived from Banham Zoo in February and recently took his first steps into his enclosure at Energy for Life: Tropical House. At a spritely six years old, keepers report that he is ‘very friendly’, curious about his new surroundings, and faster than you might expect a typical sloth to be!

In the wild, the Linné’s two-toed sloth is nocturnal and solitary. They live most of their lives up in the trees of the tropical moist lowland and montane forests of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. Their claws are used to hang from tree branches and can be 7.5cm long!

When we reopen, Tropical House will sadly be closed however you’ll be able to visit this handsome chap once further Government restrictions are lifted.

Support the zoo by adopting this species!
