Save our Stripes

Protecting one of Africa’s most endangered zebras – with your help.

Once widespread across East Africa, Grevy’s zebra are now one of the world’s most endangered wild equids. With fewer than 3,000 remaining in the wild, we need to act now if we are going to save this species.

These striking animals are more than just a beautiful species. They are indicators of ecosystem health, sharing their semi-arid rangeland home with people and livestock. When Grevy’s zebra thrive, entire landscapes benefit.

Why we need your help

Since the 1970’s Grevy’s zebra populations have plummeted by more than 75% due to habitat loss, competition with livestock, hunting, and human-wildlife conflict.

Today, northern Kenya is the last stronghold for this incredible species — but much of the population lives outside of protected areas. Sharing the land with pastoralist communities, they live in a remote and unforgiving environment, where limited local knowledge of wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict put this population at risk of isolation and loss.

Without support, Grevy’s zebra face an uncertain future.

What we’re doing

Marwell Wildlife has been working with communities in northern Kenya for over 20 years to protect Grevy’s zebra and restore the delicate balance between people, wildlife and the environment.

Our work includes:

  • Employing and training community members to monitor Grevy’s zebra and reduce threats
  • Supporting local schools and herders to inspire the next generation of conservationists
  • Raising awareness and helping build livelihoods that support both people and nature
  • Creating new opportunities for women and girls to engage in conservation and gain economic power.

This is conservation at its best – locally led, community focused, grounded in science and built to last.

Donate now to help Save Our Stripes

Earlier this year and thanks to your generosity, we raised over £10,000 through the Big Give Green Match Fund. Your donations are already hard at work, helping to support our team of community scouts. But we can’t stop there.

Right now, the team are relying on a vehicle that is quite literally on its last legs – or tyres. It is absolutely essential to their daily work – tracking zebra, engaging with local communities and protecting this endangered species across vast and rugged terrain. Without it, they could be forced to hit the brakes on the project.

Whatever you can give, your support will help to keep this vital project moving forward and protect the wildlife you love.
