November’s Animal news

November 15, 2019

We have new arrivals and a sad update.

NEW Species!

We have some new arrivals settling in behind the scenes that you’ll be able to spot soon… Three male long-nosed potoroos arrived from Blackpool Zoo and are a new species for Marwell. We hope to have more news soon, keep an eye on our social media!

Two new female zebras

Isabell, a 9-year-old Plains zebra joined us from Knowsley Safari Park at the end of October. She has joined our other Plains zebras, including Amber and Ida who also came from Knowsley, meaning the trio have been reunited! You can spot Isabell alonside our Rothschild’s giraffes and Forest Buffalo.

And, an endangered Grevy’s zebra, named Rikke, joined the collection from Edinburgh Zoo. She has settled in well alongside our current herd in our Wild Explorers paddock.

Sad news

You may have spotted on our social media that we announced the sad news of the death of one of our cheetahs, Jabal, as well as our youngest scimitar-horned oryx calf, Belle, earlier this month.

Jabal was born on 24 October 2012 at Landau Zoo, in Germany. He had been receiving treatment for the past month, however showed no sign of improvement and so the difficult decision was made by our vets and carnivores’ team to humanely euthanase him.

Belle was born here at Marwell on 27 October 2019 and passed away, unexpectedly, overnight on 17 November. Post-mortem tests are being carried out to establish the cause of her death.

A big thank you to all those who have offered their condolences and support on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We really appreciate it!
