Time to give back this Black Friday…

November 20, 2018

FatFace Winchester will be helping Marwell fundraise for a special campaign this Black Friday weekend.

Instead of Black Friday discounts, FatFace are donating £100,000 to the FatFace Foundation

The FatFace Foundation wants to help charities close to their hearts and we’re delighted the Winchester branch has chosen us.

Donations gathered by the store all weekend will go towards our current campaign to refresh and increase the size of our facilities for breeding, studying and reintroducing one of Britain’s rarest reptiles, the sand lizard.

Over the last 25 years, Marwell Wildlife has reintroduced nearly 2,000 sand lizards to heathland and coastal dune sites across the south of England, successfully re-establishing 26 populations. However, because sand lizards are unable to re-colonize suitable habitat on their own, they will continue to be dependent on conservation translocations, including reintroduction from captive breeding for the foreseeable future. There is much more work to be done to safeguard this colourful but elusive species, including our current initiative to reintroduce sand lizards to Eelmoor Marsh Site of Special Scientific Interest in Farnborough.

In September, our conservation team fitted tiny radio tags to 24 out of 86 sand lizards released at the site to help understand the behaviour of these colourful but otherwise elusive animals.

Marwell Wildlife and University of Southampton PhD student, Rachel Gardner, who is leading the sand lizard project, hand delivered collection boxes and some Marwell-themed colouring in sheets to the FatFace store where she spoke to staff about our special appeal so we hope you’ll pop in to support us when you are out shopping this weekend.

The FatFace Foundation was set up in 2009, with the aim to support people in communities where FatFace sources, manufactures, retails and distributes products. Over £1 million has been raised for charity since the FatFace Foundation was founded.
