Results from this year’s Great Grevy’s Rally are in!

Results from this year’s Great Grevy’s Rally (GGR) show there are now around 2,800 Grevy’s zebra in Kenya, representing a healthy increase in the population since 2016!

We have some wonderful news from the field!

Grevy’s zebra populations have historically experienced declines from around 15,000 individuals in the 1970s, to just 2,000 in the early 2000s. Estimating population sizes for this species is challenging, so in 2016 the Grevy’s Zebra Technical Committee, of which Marwell Wildlife is an active member, proposed a radical change in tactic by enlisting the public to search for them and take stripe pattern photographs over two consecutive days.

The 2018 GGR returned 23,000 images of Grevy’s zebra, and with an increase of around 400-500 individuals since 2016 the results are heartening. Remarkably, this is the first time that census results from a non-governmental group or consortium have been officially accepted for an endangered species in Kenya.
