Casual Retail & Admissions Assistants

Casual Assistant Interpreter 

Are you friendly & enthusiastic? Could you wow our guests with your fabulous service? Can you work school holidays, weekends & bank holidays as well as some weekdays? 

We have some exciting opportunities to join the Marwell family as a casual team member in our Social Impact & Learning team. 

We are seeking experienced and knowledgeable hosts to support our team as casual Public Engagement Assistants to ensure our premium animal experiences and encounters are of the highest quality. 

Our ideal candidates will bring a passion for nature with previous experience of delivering public engagement or related activities. Highly proficient communications skills are a must for this role as is an aptitude for engaging people of all ages and backgrounds.

Nature Interpreter - Fixed Term Contract

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Nature Interpreter to join our Social Impact & Learning Team on a fixed term basis.

In 2016, Marwell Wildlife and outdoor Kindergarten Kids Love Nature teamed up to create a nature nursery for pre-school children with access to our zoo, woodlands and surrounding countryside within the South Downs National Park. Kids Love Nature redefine the standards of early years education and the Nature Interpreter, from Marwell’s Social Impact and Learning team, runs Explorer sessions to build the children’s connection to nature. These sessions combine the sharing of scientific ideas and concepts with giving the children time, freedom and space to experience and build confidence in wild spaces to achieve the goal of nature connection.

Our ideal candidate will be a keen naturalist with a background in biological or environmental science with an interest in environmental education. We are looking for someone who embraces all weather conditions, with a nurturing character and aptitude for engaging young children. The ability to collate and summarise information and excellent writing skills are essential for the role.

Casual Environmental Services Assistant

The successful candidates will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining guest areas within the park to a high standard, ensuring our guests have an exceptional visitor experience. 

As a guest focused attraction, providing outstanding guest service at all times is an essential part of this role, therefore the successful candidate must have a proven track record of providing excellent customer service. Due to the need to drive park vehicles, candidates must also hold a full driving license valid for the UK.

Trustee Vacancy – Estates / Land Management Representative

We are a leading conservation charity, dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources.  We are looking for a keen, professional and dedicated individual to join our Board of Trustees. 

As a registered charity, our governance and overall leadership rests with our Board of Trustees who work alongside our Chief Executive and Executive Team.  Actively contributing to the strategic purpose and direction of the organisation, our Trustees provide robust oversight, assist in ensuring effective governance arrangements are in place, and help us to rigorously monitor Marwell’s performance.

We are looking to complement our existing Board of Trustees with a suitably experienced and qualified professional (a chartered surveyor, for example). Knowledge and expertise in estates or property / business management and the charitable sector would be especially welcome. We are in a particularly important period of our development, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, will reach our 50th anniversary in 2022, and have ambitious plans for a longer-term programme of sustainable capital investment ahead.

Trustees participate in four half-day Board meetings a year, and you will also need to be available for five Business Development Committee meetings (covering the remit of Audit, Risk, Commercial and Cap Ex). In return, through active participation in inspiring and engaging debate with fellow Trustees, you will have the opportunity to shape and guide our mission-led organisation. Whilst this is a voluntary unremunerated position, we do pay reasonable expenses. We are committed to increasing the diversity of our team and making sure we best reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

Work Experience

Important information:

If you are interested in keeper work experience, please read the following carefully before contacting us.

Placements for 2022 will be considered during November 2021.

Applications for 2022 should be submitted no earlier than 1 November 2021. For further information please contact our Registrar. We do not hold applications on file.

Marwell runs an unpaid work experience keeper scheme between March and August each year, for a period of two weeks only.

Placements are limited to students over the age of 17 years and who are already studying an animal related course such as the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA).

For Sparsholt College (Winchester) students - applications should be made to your tutor direct at the beginning of November of the year prior to the period of work experience required.

We do not offer internships

All work experience students must fulfil all of the above criteria and be able to produce a letter from their tutor confirming their appropriate course and be able to attend an interview before being considered for a placement .

Veterinary student applications

COVID-19 update - Outside our planned elective schedule we are currently unable to accommodate any veterinary placements on-site due to on-going restrictions imposed by the current situation. This will be reviewed in January 2022.

We currently have limited availability for veterinary student placements, and can only provide clinical EMS. Priority is given to vet students enrolled with the University of Surrey. However, where possible, the vet team will consider 4th and final year vet students, from other Universities. Earlier years cannot be accommodated at present. Animal Behaviour Work Experience Placement

As an action oriented conservation charity, Marwell Wildlife’s desire is to connect people with nature. Through enthusing people about the wonders of the natural world we’re certain they’ll share our passion to conserve it.

An exciting work experience opportunity has arisen to support Marwell's Animal Behaviourist with researching, monitoring and assessing animal welfare across our 140 acre zoological park. This work experience opportunity will allow the successful applicant to gain experience in zoo-based research and the scientific assessment and advancement of animal welfare.

This is a 9 month opportunity of approximately 21-35 hours per week.

Working alongside our Animal Behaviourist as part of our wider Veterinary Services Team your duties will include:

  • Research project design
  • Behavioural data collection via observations in person or via video
  • Mining of existing databases for analysis
  • Behavioural data analysis
  • Maintaining research records
  • Carrying out literature searches and report/journal writing
  • Support use of the Animal Welfare Assessment Grid
  • Organising and leading Journal Club
  • Support with general administration

This placement is suitable for applicants with an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in zoology, animal behaviour/welfare, biology, or a related discipline. Experience collecting behavioural data would also be advantageous as would basic statistical analysis skills.
