Potoroo at Marwell Zoo

Meet our new potoroo pair, Neville and Truffle!

Truffle may be the younger of the two, but she’s certainly the bolder, often the first to appear when keepers arrive with food.

Potoroos are small omnivorous marsupials from southeastern Australia and Tasmania and they are listed on the IUCN Red List as near threatened, with numbers still decreasing. These fascinating creatures have a strong sense of smell, which they use to dig for their favourite food, fungi.

Next time you visit, keep an eye out for Neville and Truffle exploring their habitat near the Native Species Zone.

New arrival in our antelope herd
We’re thrilled to welcome Clifford, a male roan antelope, who recently arrived from Chester Zoo. He’s joined our two females, Swala and Dalila, as part of the EAZA Ex-situ breeding programme and has already made a great impression on his new companions.

Roan antelope are one of the largest antelope species in Africa and are easily recognised by their striking appearance, a roan-coloured (reddish-brown) coat, long tufted ears, and dramatic black-and-white facial markings that resemble a mask. Both males and females have strong, ringed horns that curve backwards.

Native to savannahs and lightly wooded grasslands across sub-Saharan Africa, roan antelope live in small herds led by a dominant female. They’re known for being bold and powerful, and will even face off against predators like lions when threatened.

Their conservation status is currently listed as Least Concern, but they face pressure from habitat loss and hunting in some areas.

We’re hopeful that Clifford will play a key role in the future of the species, and perhaps even contribute to the pitter-patter of tiny hooves in the not-too-distant future.

A heartfelt thank you

Many of you will be aware of the devastating loss of Valentina, our female Amur tiger, following her introduction to Pasha.

Amur tiger, Valentina

We’re continuing to support our dedicated team through this difficult time and would like to say a heartfelt thank you for the overwhelming kindness and support during this difficult time. Your compassion means a great deal to us.
